Helping Hearts

 

 

Helping Hearts is having an auction on May 18, 2011 and Tiny Tutus is so excited to be a part of it!

Helping Hearts is a non profit organization (located in Canada) created by Melissa (Melissa Knowles Photography) & Michelle (Michelle Regner Photography) with the goal of being able to provide families with free photography sessions for families with children who are suffering a life-altering illness or disability. Helping Hearts now has an entire team of photographers who are dedicated to donating their time to Helping Hearts because they believe in sharing the gift of photography with as many families as possible. Families receive a complimentary photography session, a disk with approximately 20-30 print ready images and a complimentary 8x10 print of choice. Images are posted to a private online gallery and they are welcomed to share with family and friends who are unable to visit. Sessions are entirely accommodated to the needs of the individual family. It will be held at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club in Vancouver. Tickets are $75 each and include dinner and complimentary wine. About BCNF:

The BCNF was established in 1984 to respond to the needs of individuals with NF and their families. The organization exists today because of one individual – Paul Ralfs. Paul Ralfs’ determination and belief that individuals with NF need not go through their journey alone, drove him to found The BC Neurofibromatosis Foundation. The BCNF continues its work today through the efforts of a Board of Directors, part-time staff and volunteers.

What is NF:

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is an umbrella name for 3 distinct complex genetic disorders that share a common manifestation: tumour growth in the tissues that surround nerves. Most of these tumours are benign, although occasionally they can become malignant. NF may also cause additional complications such as disfigurement, bone deformities and learning disabilities. Neurofibromatosis equally affects males and females of all ethnic groups. Although more common than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Huntington’s disease and Tay-Sachs disease combined, neurofibromatosis is largely unknown and misunderstood in the general population. The 3 types of neurofibromatosis are:

• Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1): the most common form affecting approximately 1 in 3,000 to 4,000 births.
• Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2): the less common form, affecting approximately 1 in 40,000 births.
• Schwannomatosis appears to occur as often as NF2.
